This would be the first NFA Championship Game appearance for the Generals. They would shock to league by winning the Central Division with a 12-2 record. Richie Cannon, who was the NFA MVP for the 1960 season, would try to show off his skills after being mostly quiet in the Playoff Bowl against the Los Angeles Gladiators.
GAME SUMMARY
Boston would receive the ball first, and would put their MVP quarterback to work. Tisch would lead the team from their own 22 yard line down the field quickly with two big passing plays to Ed Waters and Lee Burkett. After four plays, the Bluejackets were already in field goal range. Boston's halfback Charlie Horner would have a tough time rushing with Cleveland's front four swallowing him up at the line of scrimmage at each attempt. The Cleveland secondary would have a tough time shutting down the passing game and would allow a 26 yard bomb for a touchdown from Tisch to Ed Waters. After the extra point was good, Boston led early in the game 7-0. This would be the only score in the first quarter as Cleveland's offense would struggle. Richie Cannon would be shut down again mostly and would not be able to rush for more than 20 yards before halftime. In the second quarter, Cleveland's offense looked like they woke up a little bit. Richie Cannon would be shutdown and swallowed up by Boston's defense every time he touched the ball, but Dan Marzell would benefit. Marzell would rush for 67 yards in the first half. The Generals third drive of the game would end with a 7 yard pass from John Miller to Dan Marzell. After the extra point attempt was good, Cleveland tied the game up at 7. The Generals would never take the lead though. On Boston's next drive, they would answer back with a 14 yard rushing touchdown by Charlie Horner. After the extra point, Boston took a 14-10 lead. Just before time expired before the half, Cleveland would be able to quickly advance into field goal range to add points before the half. They would have to settle for a 33 yard field goal to enter halftime trailing 10-14. These would be the last scores Cleveland would have in the game. After halftime, it was obvious that Boston had made adjustments on their defense to handle Marzell. The Cleveland rushing attack that dominated during the regular season, became nonexistent. Boston would hold the Cleveland rushers to a total of 92 yards rushing the entire game. Meanwhile, Charlie Horner would have a field day rushing the ball. He would have another rushing touchdown in the third quarter. This time for 15 yards to give the Bluejackets a 21-10 lead after the extra point. Harold Tisch would add on to the lead the next Boston possession with a 23 yard pass to Lee Burkett. After the extra point, Boston now led 28-10. The game had turned into a blowout and the Cleveland fans who were in attendance were starting to leave. Cleveland Generals players even looked disinterested in continuing the game. In the fourth quarter the Generals would only have 1 first down. Boston would score one last time to give themselves a 35-10 lead after a Charlie Horner 1 yard rushing touchdown and the extra point. For the first time since 1945, the Boston Bluejackets were back on top of the NFA. This would be their third NFA Championship trophy. This would give Harold Tisch his fourth which would tie him with Phil Sans for the most in NFA history.
