The second NFA Championship was held at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, MD on December 8, 1940. The 10-2 NFA East Division Champions, the Baltimore Knights, hosted the 8-4 NFA West Division Champions, the St Louis Aviators. The Knights beat the Aviators earlier in the season on November 17th, 30-10.
GAME SUMMARY
The 1940 NFA Championship would be one of the most lopsided championship games in NFA history. Baltimore's halfback Hank Miller would put together one of the all time greatest performances in a championship game. Miller would rush for 213 yards and 4 touchdowns. His performance alone was good enough to defeat the Aviators. Quarterback Gill Hodges would throw for one touchdown just before halftime to make the score 28-0 before the half. The league MVP, Aviators quarterback Jeffrey White, did not have a good performance. He would throw for just 112 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. In the games final quarter of play, Lance Gibbs pulled all his offensive starters out of the game and put in his second and some of his third string players. At the end of the massacre, Baltimore won 38-8. For the first time, an American President was in attendance. President Franklin D Roosevelt would present the Presidents Trophy to the Baltimore Knights.
