The fourth NFA Season started on September 13, 1942. Before the start of the season, many players left the league to enter service in World War II. With 310 players serving in the armed forces, teams rosters were depleted. The NFA East was a hotly contested race between the Baltimore Knights and the Boston Bluejackets. It would not be decided until Week 11, November 22, 1942. Baltimore would lose to the New York Lions 23-17. This loss would knock the Knights out of the race for the division title. Boston would win their second straight NFA East Division championship and appear in their second straight American Bowl. The NFA West was not as interesting as the NFA East. The defending American Bowl champions, the Cincinnati Buckeyes, would go 11-1 and win their second straight NFA West Division championship. They would be the first franchise in NFA history to have 3 division titles. For the first time in NFA history, the same two teams would meet in two straight American Bowls.
