The fifth American Bowl was held at Manhattan Field in New York City, NY on December 5, 1943. The 8-2 NFA East Division Champions, the New York Lions, hosted the 9-2 NFA West Division Champions, the Detroit Mustangs. New York and Detroit had played each other on October 24, 1943. New York defeated Detroit at home in a thrilling 20-17 game.
GAME SUMMARY
The Lions would dominate the game until the final quarter. Benjamin Moore would throw 2 touchdowns and Lawrence Anderson would kick two field goals to put the Lions ahead 20-0 to start the final quarter of the game. New York's defense would let the Mustangs get back in the game though. The Mustangs would score touchdowns on two consecutive drives to make it a one possession game. After giving up the second touchdown, New York would run the ball to kill as much of the clock as possible. The drive would end with a Joe Governor touchdown to put the Lions up 27-14. On Detroit's next drive, Giles Richland would turn the ball over with an interception to New York's George Simons to end any hope of a comeback. New York would win its second American Bowl in franchise history. Commissioner William Hensley would present the Presidents Trophy to Lions owner William Jansen. For his two touchdown passes, Benjamin Moore was named MVP.
