The eighteenth NFA Championship Game would be a rematch of the 1954 NFA Championship. The New York Lions had won their seventh NFA East Division title and was again hosting the Chicago Packers. The Packers won their fourth division title in franchise history and first NFA Central Division title. The rosters were the same for the most part for both teams since they last met in the championship game in 1954. This time around many felt that New York's league leading defense would be able to knock the Packers around and prevent the leagues number one offense from putting more than 10 points on the board. They would be right. Unfortunately for Chicago, history would repeat itself and the 1956 NFA Championship would be another lopsided victory for the Lions.
GAME SUMMARY
New York won the coin toss this time around and elected to put their defense on the field first. Leonard Mitchell was not scared one bit of the league leading Chicago offense or the league MVP Bradley Stone. New York's defense would hold Chicago's offense to only 22 yards in the first quarter. New York's offense would be able to score on their first possession of the game with a Barry Jackman 17 yard rush. They would become sluggish however as the opening quarter progressed and they would have to settle for two field goals. At the end of the first quarter, New York led 13-0. In the second quarter, New York's offense began settling in and would put together two touchdown drives to score 27 points before halftime. Chicago's offense would look much better in the second quarter than it did in the first. After being pinned down at their own 5 yard line after a New York punt, Chicago would put together a perfect 95 yard scoring drive. The longest scoring drive in NFA Championship history. Bradley Stone would rush for 45 yards which included a 9 yard touchdown. This would be the only touchdown of the game for Chicago though. Unfortunately for Chicago, New York's offense wasn't the only one scoring touchdowns. After being pinned down again by a New York punt inside their own 10 yard line, Chicago looked to punt the ball away just before halftime. Frank Campley would be able to breakthrough the Chicago line and block the punt. Chester Parkman would then recover the ball in the endzone for a touchdown. At halftime the route was on and New York led 34-7. New York's defense would continue to dominate the second half of the game. Chicago's offense would have to start taking risks to try and claw their way back into the game. None of the risks would pay off. Even when Chicago would catch a break after Barry Jackman and Mark Brown fumbled the ball, the Packers offense would not be able to put up any points. Phil Sans would have two passing touchdowns for the Liions, one in the third and one in the fourth quarter. At the end of the game, New York won 47-7. This would be their sixth NFA Championship.
