The twelth American Bowl was held at Manhattan Field, New York, NY. This would be a rematch of the 1943 American Bowl between the New York Lions and Detroit Mustangs. The Lions would host the championship game after finishing the season 11-1. Detroit would finish the season 10-2. This would be New York's third straight American Bowl appearance and they would be favored to win their fourth title in franchise history. The Lions and the Mustangs did not play each other in the 1950 Season.
GAME SUMMARY
Detroit would put the first points on the board in the first quarter, but they would quickly trail the rest of the game. After Detroit's 23 yard field goal attempt was good, New York quickly responded with touchdowns in the first and second quarters to take a 14-3 lead at halftime. After the half, New York would receive the ball first and added to their lead with a 42 yard field goal. On the ensuing drive, Detroit responded with the biggest play of the day for either team. Dwight Eddleman would throw a 81 yard pass to Richard Simpson who would score a touchdown. Detroit's defense would then find new energy and force New York to punt on their next 2 drives. The Mustangs offense however was unable to add any points. Dwight Eddleman would throw his second interception of the game early in the 4th quarter which would give New York great field position on the Mustang 42 yard line to start the drive. New York would finish the drive with a 25 yard rushing touchdown by Joe Governor. This would seal the game for the Lions who would go on to win 24-10.
